If I had better eyes, I might be able to find my way around better but I cant so Ive had to use the YouTube video tutorial, its not bad and I hope it helps if someone else is facing the same problem. Ive been digging thru and now I get a booting error in the official GZDoom code (don’t ever trust what the Epic Games guys say, they’ll lie to you). What I noticed in the default code that causes the game to crash is the Start3 (a call to a compare/swap op) is invalid in x86-64/GCC.
I changed the v320 from 1024×786 to something bigger (2560x1440x16). Just changed it in the launcher, then opened the “change resolution” dialog in the game, and changed it there. Now everything seems to work just fine, but the graphics have switched from the previous mode.
It seems at least that the usual new graphics mode is just being used for the actual “game”, and not the UI.
Ive gotten this game to work in windowed mode after updating to the latest version of my steam library (1.03). I only noticed this after I updated my Steam library, and did a complete uninstall and reinstall. After that I copied my saves and my usual Steam settings across.
Before, I was able to run in windowed mode fine, but the game would drop to black during scenes. On a hunch, I tried going to the game settings and changing the audio settings to recording and it worked fine.
I started on a nvidia 1070, then switched to a 1060. Now I am on a 1070 (not the original), and I got the game to run in fullscreen mode just fine on build v.19.00.010. I had to upgrade my NVIDIA drivers and that seemed to help, though I could not find any documentation of a change that needs to be made for the game to not run fullscreen.
modern portable gaming hardware has got to the point where an optical drive isn’t an absolute necessity anymore. if you’re using windows 10, you can burn games using their in-built emulators and the included tools to rip your games off the disc. if you’re using windows 7, then by all means get the original disc but don’t worry too much about ripping it off. you can just have fun with the game itself.
afaik, for many games, they are directly ripped to your hdd by some kind of program. maybe users could check it’s written on the disc. for example, pokémon firered and emerald. and also pokémon diamond, pearl, and platinum.
finally, if you’ve got the original discs, you might be able to get the game to work by running the original installer. that way you don’t need to get any code (this method is an infrequent cheat with windows 8/10), and you won’t need to use a program to rip off the disc (in which case, you’re going to have to delete some of your game files). you can do this with most games, though games that use copy protection are probably going to be the hardest.
