Every track in the game challenges the player to perfect the art of precision driving, with the result that subsequent rounds of play become harder and harder to finish successfully. Each wave of enemies on each track on the map is different – you cannot guess them all, and their level of detection or ability to use their projectiles make defeating them time consuming. However, with careful tweaking of the ‘Speed’ and ‘Turbo’ options, a truly satisfying balance can be reached as you bump, jump, slow and drift through the course at the speed you want to in order to minimise damage to yourself or your vehicle.
At the heart of the game is its familiar Game Park style controls which see players move the analogue stick left and right in order to steer, and to jump, and to slow down. Unlike some of the portables I’ve played this century, the’shoot’ button on the directional pad does not pick up speed either, and instead triggers a secondary attack, or in the case of the opponent, your allies can pull a trigger to release a rocket that will pass the broken dash of your enemies.
Some might suggest that there is no point in getting dragged into a second wave of enemies unless you are gaining extra points or bonuses, but the game is set up so that you always start off with three lives, and new opponents can simply be met at a checkpoint. Similarly, enemies always die when they touch the ground, although providing they don’t kill themselves, they will always regenerate and will keep trying to attack and kill you until you start draining the last of your allotted lives.
The game’s speed can be increased with the use of a turbo pedal, and this acts as a highspeed change of route as you are thrown into the fastest lane for the time you are out of the main pathway. In addition, later in the game when you can use the lander vehicle, touching the ladder action
