Transforming the majority of these ideas into an entertaining and beautiful film has been a true challenge for director Julie Taymor. A few of these ideas, like the Kingsman universe, would have worked fine on their own. However, trying to integrate them into a universe of its own has made this film a very, very complex movie to watch and understand.
Greeted with critical praise following its completion in 1989, Across the Universe grabbed the attention of musicians and film fans with its innovative and often abrasive use of instruments and styles. The scene shifts to the perspective of several male and female aliens. The film is filled with this kind of distorted or zoomed out shot of these planet-like spaceships. John is shown taking to new heights as he surveys the spartan galaxy of the great universe. The shot settles on his face in closeup, bathed in the soft glow of the stars. John explains he came from this part of the universe in this time, though he’s unsure where he is now. Someone knocks on the door and a figure in a white uniform enters.
Julie Taymor’s new musical Across the Universe, told from the points of view of British dockworker Jude (Jim Sturgess) and American girl Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), reunites the director’s themes and interests, taking inspiration from 1960s music and culture to convey the 1960s counterculture. Taymor plays with the idea of Britain becoming the 51st state, having a utopian feel, but also opens it up to the strange, the supernatural and the psychedelic, while following up last year’s equally ambitious production of The Lion King as a prequel to the current Hollywood war on masculinity. But Taymor is not out to reinvent the musical here, and to her credit, it fits into the thematic blend of her whole career. She adds her own particular touch, with some genuinely unique and mesmerizing camera movement, setting and some imaginative and effective audience gimmicks. The central concept of a utopian life in America can be seen as a series of socio-political commentaries on the times. But it’s also, like all Taymor’s work, carried by a richness of imagination and ideas, which always ground the project in detail and context. It may lack the magic of the $50 million Disney version, but here it proves it has plenty of quality.
