In northwestern Africa, Allied attempts to establish a bridgehead over the Atlantic Ocean were checked. Troops of Western Task Force began the breakout offensive in the Falaise Gap with the objective of enveloping the Germans and cutting off their communication with the Atlantic Ocean. The Allies’ main assault came at dawn on August 16th on the western flank of Falaise with the first wave of Generaloberst Paul Hausser’s 6. By June 30th, 13th Army had to withdraw its forces to the north.
