A WOMAN is hoping that the generosity of the public can help her to raise £1,500 for a cancer charity which supports her mum who is having a baby this month.

Layla (19), from Kilkeel, is due to give birth to a baby girl in a week’s time and although she is a trained nurse, she is currently working in a hospital and cannot afford to take maternity leave.

Layla, who is looking to take a break after the birth of her baby, is appealing for sponsors to contribute.

And she is urging the public to help her by donating money to her Mums4Mums Cancer Appeal, which will be made available when her mum’s due date is confirmed.

Layla, who plans to be a health visitor, said: “I know that my mum is going to be a great mother and I’m sure she will have everything she needs but I am concerned about how she is going to afford it.

“I’ve made a few phone calls but I don’t want to take any money off her, as it would make things harder for her.

“She is going to be my mum’s carer for as long as she can. I would be mad if I had to take a year off work to be with her, it’s just not fair.”

After returning to work, Layla and her mum are looking at having a moveable bed fitted to their house and a washing machine.

This will be something they can take to the hospital where Layla will work, as it will make life easier for them both.
