I am trying to use setTimeout function to delay one thing and there are several questions on that topic. But I still have some questions for setTimeout.

is it possible to make setTimeout function to wait only some time (not an exact time)?

for example:

if I put 10 seconds as timeout, it will do something for 10 seconds, if the the time that is passed is more than 10 seconds it will do something else, and if less than 10 seconds it will do something else.

I want to make it so the function does something for only 5 seconds. if the time that is passed is more than 5 seconds it will do something else, and if less than 5 seconds it will do something else.
