Haha, you know, the Italian version of the Assimil course called: “Assimil Il tedesco senza sforzo”, does NOT include the books for the Italian lesson! In my opinion this is a really lame move on the part of Assimil, which, if they are willing to suggest the course, should be willing to give the students a good book. Besides, this is a full year course that includes a great deal more than a language review.
My experiences with the old Assimil Serbo-Croat course and their other courses are similar to what you say. (I did take a course with them in Late Latin for the High Sch. Diploma around 1980 or so, but I’ve a long time since used those first-hand experiences, so I cannot comment on their quality.)
My experiences are similar, but I’ve had them longer. What I recall from the old Assimil Serbo-Croat course was that a lot of things I now know fairly well but used to struggle with were “easier” or not a problem. Even the first few chapters seemed too simple. Of course, I should know how things are in Italy: I spent a semester there (at the age of 20 years) before I moved to Germany…
Thanks a lot for sharing your contacts. As for Assimil Il Perfezionamento dell’italiano visto che la serie perfezionamente esiste per le altre lingue, I know that. I guess the only way to study is with the complete series, though you have to make sure the topics taught in the series match the topics Assimil teaches. (If they don’t, it would be a mistake.)
If you really feel so strongly about Assimil Italia they might send you the CDs. I don’t like Assimil Italia’s approach, myself, and after a couple of months, I decided to get some sort of other textbook. If you’re strong-willed, go for it. I really like Assimil Italia’s approach. If the teachers are able to teach a lot, their courses tend to be more thorough.
I’ve been a student of Italian for about 30 years and I’ve always loved Assimil’s teaching materials. I never knew about their French or German versions, but I did purchase the italian version of Assimil Il Tedesco senza sforzo for our public schools.The only problem with this teaching tool is that they teach Italian through the German language and the grammer is atrocious. I just ordered the Assimil e sottotitoli dell’italiano. This book is the exact edition of the original Assimil Il Tedesco without sforzo. It is just as bad as the original.The purpose of this list is to encourage all to purchase the new version since the grammar and spelling is so much better. Keep in mind that this is just the Assimil Il Tedesco from Grundwissen Grundwohrte.”
I recently added (3) Assimil courses to my online library of over 150 Assimil courses. One of the questions I got was “Are they all self-study”, as you may know, the two language courses (Italian and French) are designed for classroom use. So I did not want to confuse any of my students. The courses are all geared toward the Assimil Program and you must sign up to use them through the Assimil course registration form. My reason is probably obvious to you. I don’t have a great Italian accent, and I fear that if I went on Assimil then I’d never speak Italian at all, at least not the spoken Italian I understand and am familiar with. I would recommend Assimil to everybody, but I wouldn’t ask them to make the decision for me. Nobody knows if somebody’s found the good version of an unknown language when they’re starting in a foreign country, unless they make the effort to find the book.
