How can I create a unique column in my PostgreSQL table?

I need to create a unique column in my PostgreSQL table. I tried using insert on duplicate key update, but the database reports that the constraint is violated. I do have auto_increment set to off.

When you create a table, you can set the column “unique” to true. If the database later discovers that this column already exists, it will throw an exception.
