AutoCAD can trace its origins to the early 1980s, when its founders were instrumental in bringing the human-computer interface to the computer graphics world. In the 1970s, a group of engineers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory led by Thomas J. Laskey and Joseph Beedle revolutionized the way people view the world. They wrote the first computer-controlled camera that could be driven by software that responded to what the camera was seeing. This camera became the forerunner for today’s Autodesk technologies. They used this camera to create the first computer-aided design system for analyzing drawings and 3D models, which led to the idea of a computer-aided drafting (CAD) software product.

In 1982, Jim Elliott, head of the computer graphics department at Lawrence Berkeley Lab, and the software developers at RLE (Research Laboratory Electronics) developed a laser scanner, a device that has revolutionized the way people view the world. This laser scanner (called the P4000) was the first such device, which could translate a computer display of a two-dimensional image into a collection of parallel bars that could be “read” by a computer. This ability to “read” the bars made it possible for the computer to render a three-dimensional, perspective view of the scanned object.

This was a revolutionary step because, until that time, the computer had no real sense of what was in front of it. The computer could display the bars (as long as it could focus on the bars), but the computer had no understanding of the object itself. When the bars were translated into objects, it was still a manual process, so the computer had no understanding of the objects’ size, location, or how they should be drawn.

Jim Elliott started using this laser scanner as the basis for a very different type of CAD software program. These two concepts were combined and developed over the next two years, resulting in AutoCAD.

How to open a NSWindow from a modal dialog and hide it?

I have a modal dialog opened from my NSWindowController.
The dialog will be used by multiple users.
So I need to keep the NSWindow open and accessible while the user continue to work.
How can I do this without loosing modality?
In iOS the method called show modalViewController does this for me, but it is not available in Xcode 4.0.2.

You can just create a new NSWindowController and instantiate it. It’s up to you to decide whether the new controller should be displayed as a modal window or not. It will maintain it’s own NSWindow, the window that you create will not become modal.
