In the early 1980s, graphics applications were quite expensive, and expensive to maintain as well. Many companies provided their own graphics software on their own mainframe computers. The market for these mainframe CAD apps was small because the applications were expensive, the source code was proprietary, and the communication with the mainframe was expensive. In January 1982, Autodesk, which was not a CAD company, released AutoCAD, a popular Windows-based desktop CAD package that ran on a PC. Many people thought that AutoCAD was a copy of LISP-based CAD software, since both were written in COBOL and AutoCAD in Lisp, one of the first big-endian languages. However, after several years of enhancements, the company that developed AutoCAD decided that LISP wasn’t practical, and instead, opted for the object-oriented approach in which everything is an object. In an object-oriented environment, no file is fixed and must instead be updated and changed. In contrast, in the COBOL and Lisp systems, all of the data was kept in files that had to be permanently fixed and updated. The first version of AutoCAD, Release 1, was originally available only as a desktop app for the Xerox Alto computer. The earliest version of AutoCAD had two limitations. First, it was limited to X-Y coordinate system, so that all the objects in the drawing area had to be positioned in that coordinate system. Second, it was a stand-alone app that couldn’t communicate with other programs. This meant that the user had to provide most of the data needed to create a drawing, and the programs (automatically generated templates) were only used to process the data that was provided.
