Last year, the General Assembly passed legislation that would have ensured the “organic” label is not used on crops that are not produced according to organic standards, but the bill has not moved forward in the Senate.
For the first time since the organic label became mandatory for those growing and selling the products in 2002, North Carolina farmers have teamed up to organize, and they’re looking for their customers to stand with them.
Don Moore, a farmer from Mitford, said the bill is “a great idea” that will help the state’s organic farmers.
But Moore and other farmers say consumers can help them out by backing them up with their dollars when they shop at the farmers market.
“We’re going to the farmers market with a new message,” Moore said. “We’re going to be supporting the organic movement, and we’re going to be educating the public about our mission.”
Others, like Sallie Neill, say they’re not sure why the bill isn’t moving forward, and they don’t like the fact that organic certification has become so restrictive.
“The whole concept of the organic movement was for farmers to have more control over what happens to their land,” Neill said. “I don’t see how it does that.”
