There’s a lot of good news for all the AutoCAD users. AutoCAD 2023 will ship with two new features: Rapidly import feedback into your designs, including from printed paper or PDFs; and Start a Markup session, to get feedback for your drawings.

Import and Markup:

More than 20 years ago, I drew up a proposal for Autodesk to develop an import tool that would automatically create an annotation in the drawing, based on information from a printed paper or PDF. I submitted the proposal and waited a long time for a response. After many years of waiting, the imported annotations were implemented in AutoCAD 2010.

There are many reasons why that tool, as we originally designed it, was great. But some things changed. We wanted to enable any number of annotators and they could provide annotation in any language. We made the annotation import very robust and the ink flow was very different from a pen. In AutoCAD 2010, annotations could have a stroke width up to 1 inch, which is almost impossible to do with a pen. We also had to deal with printers and PDF files, which could use different ink flow rates. And we had to deal with the new print process and all the new paper sizes.

We discovered a way to do this import very easily. In AutoCAD 2010, there are tools for attaching a pointer to a specific location and converting the pointer location to an annotation. But the ink flow is still a problem. So we created a new tool for AutoCAD 2010, called the Drawing Manager. This tool allows a user to enter a new annotation from scratch, attach it to a specific location in the drawing, and convert it to a marker and ink flow. We also created a Drawing Manager tool for AutoCAD 2017.

With this tool, we solved the ink flow problem, and we could also handle various paper sizes, including very large prints. And for Autodesk to bring a new feature to AutoCAD 2023, we needed the blessing of the AutoCAD development team.
