AutoCAD is a sophisticated, powerful, yet easy-to-learn, and affordable 2D and 3D drafting and design tool. It has been in continuous development since its creation, and has been developed and released several times a year, with new features and new functions added in each release.
Not only is it a powerful and useful tool to produce professional quality drawings, AutoCAD is an excellent platform for learning to use a 2D or 3D drafting program in general, and in AutoCAD in particular.
This lesson shows how to draw lines and shapes, make dimensions, and customize the appearance of your drawing. By the end of this lesson, you will have some good experience drawing with the AutoCAD drawing program.

AutoCAD comes with several drawing tools, each of which can be customized to produce a unique result. The software allows you to draw geometric shapes such as lines, rectangles, circles, ellipses, polygons, freeform polylines, and spline curves.
To create a line in AutoCAD, you must first create a line.
Open the drawing, select the Line tool in the Tools palette, then click and drag on the drawing canvas to draw a line (figure 1). A thin, dashed line will appear to the right of your drawing (figure 2). A solid line with a dash will appear to the left of your drawing (figure 3).

When you click and drag with the Line tool, the cursor will change into a crosshair.
You can create multiple lines using the crosshair cursor. Each new line appears when you release the mouse button. You can move the cursor over the drawing and create lines without moving your mouse cursor over the drawing (drag and drop).

Similar software includes: AutoCAD LT, the pre-2002 version of AutoCAD, released on December 1, 1999 and AutoCAD SE, its successor released on June 5, 2012, also by Autodesk. These products are not AutoCAD releases, but are separate programs that contain portions of AutoCAD code.
File formats
AutoCAD creates both drawing file formats and a CADDOC (Comma-Separated Data Object Conforming) file format. AutoCAD’s native file format is the CADDOC file format, described in the specification D2044-93. It is a comma-separated data format similar to the tab-separated data format commonly used in spreadsheet software, although it was developed to provide a simpler means of sharing and exchanging information. Its original purpose was for sharing 3D modeling information in a file format that could also be used as a tab-separated data format for non-3D drawing files.
AutoCAD also creates a drawing file format using the ARF (AutoCAD Refinement Format) specification. This specification is a file format used for refinement data, which is data used during auto-correction on complex drawings. It uses the same basic layout as the CADDOC specification, but its layout allows refinement data to be added to the file. The first AutoCAD release to use ARF was AutoCAD release 14. ARF was used in many later releases. For a time, ARF was the default refinement file format. The older BRF and the newer GRF (Graphic Refinement Format) were also supported in earlier releases, but are no longer supported in AutoCAD. The ARF file format specification, as well as the data format used by ARF, are outlined in D2044-97.
In a number of AutoCAD releases from 2016, there is support for writing to CAD PDF, a file format used to export to devices that do not support vector graphics. A format for outputting to PDF is included in the AutoLISP language.
