Recently, 2 children aged 3 and 14 years, respectively, who were diagnosed with WNV neuroinvasive disease after close contact with a dead bird in a child’s backyard in New York City were described. In October 2013, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) reported 3 other cases of WNV neuroinvasive disease in adults with close bird exposure. This report presents an epidemiologic investigation and infection control measures implemented to prevent the reoccurrence of WNV-related illness in children in New York City. DOHMH conducted a detailed epidemiologic investigation of the index child who presented with encephalitis. The family and their neighbors were interviewed to determine WNV exposure risk factors. Samples of the dead bird and the index child’s yard were tested for WNV RNA. After counseling and risk-reduction measures, the index child and her family were referred to and followed by their pediatrician. A case-contact investigation was performed to identify and counsel other children at increased risk of developing WNV disease, and to determine if preventive measures should be implemented. All 3 cases were associated with a backyard in which a dead bird was found. The index child’s grandparents and 2 family dogs were exposed to the bird. All 3 children developed symptomatic WNV infection, but none developed neuroinvasive disease. The New York City experience suggests that if bird removal measures are properly implemented, children exposed to WNV-infected birds remain healthy.
