I’ve had the absolute pleasure to be working on Adobe Photoshop since 2005. This review begins a series of upcoming reviews on Adobe Photoshop.

I’ll start by highlighting some of the new features that Adobe has added to their Photo Studio product line. These features, especially the Auto Fix brush and the live swatch preview, are getting so good that people are using the new brushes and swatches all over the Web. This is a phenomenon that I’m sure you have seen yourself when you do a search for a Photoshop brush online.

There are editing features that make Photoshop the go-to application for photo editing. Albums helps with organizing your imagery. Image Merge helps to adjust the composition of your images and tone down distracting elements. The continuous curves and straighten features help to quickly correct problems you come across when retouching an image. I could go on. Adobe Photo Studio, the new product line, tries to bring all of these, and more, into a single application for photo editing that is attractive and easy to use. It’s sort of like the iPhone for photography.

A new feature is an automatic mood or effect. This includes several preset moods, effects and frames, as well as a few customizable options, and it makes it easy to instantly apply a mood to an image. It’s really easy-to use. The panel is easy to find; the moods are easy to understand and use, and you can easily customize them. Here, I apply the Boogie Brown mood, setting it for 4 settings, with the default for Display comes set at pop-up. It looks OK in the preview. Next I add some adjustments with the adjustment layer. When I go into the pane, I realize that the presets are so similar that I don’t need to apply any adjustments to my image, but I’ll adjust the Preset for a more natural look. Using the buttons on the right edge of the screen, I select another preset, a subtle look, and tweak it a bit. To finish, I apply it to the whole image, and it looks good. It’s a welcome addition that should make life easier, and pleasant, for photographers.
