the major downside of code vein is its very poor quest design. the previous diablo games were deliberately convoluted and hard to follow, in order to reward the player with a sense of completion and satisfaction. code vein is almost the opposite of that. the quests are so easy to follow that it’s almost impossible to feel like you’ve done something important. the next quest on the list just says “go to the next area”, which is an indication that the developers didn’t even bother to try to put the whole game into a narrative context. the quests are also incredibly linear, and filled with pointless backtracking. one quest, for example, sends you to a dungeon that’s full of monsters. in order to kill them, you need to find the key to the dungeon, which you can find by talking to a woman in an inn. the next quest will tell you to go to the dungeon, and tell you to talk to the woman. in order to kill the monsters, you need the key again, so you’ll have to go back to the woman in the inn and say “hey, do you have the key to the dungeon?” it’s just a circle.
however, the plot is interesting if you can ignore the fact that it’s nonsensical. the game starts with a bit of a history lesson, which is nice, as it’s sometimes hard to care about the characters if you don’t know anything about them. the idea that a “mortal enemy” literally blew up the world is a fun one, especially as we get to see the effects of this on the landscape. the further the plot gets, the more heavily it takes a handwavey approach to explaining the weird thing that happened.
there are no autosaves in the game. you play through the story in real time. if you die, you start back at the last point where you had health and you’re forced to rely on your annoying partner to resurrect you. it’s nothing new, but it’s never less than annoying. you also can’t use potions or magic items. if you have a specific weapon you want to use or a specific magic spell you want to cast, you have to find a way to make sure that’s the case before you go into battle. there’s no level-up screen, no nothing. you just play.
