lamely dubbed conan the destroyer, the film opens in the peaceful kingdom of shadizar. a month before, conan returned to find zula living with a young girl, jehnna. he has since been adopted by the royal family, and is now the king. zula is pregnant with conan’s child and decides to stay in shadizar until the baby is born. conan is in love with zula, and meets jehnna, who is actually an exiled princess and one of his long-lost sisters. conan is also smitten with another woman, princess nathos, who is the king’s sister. her husband is dead, so he marries her, even though she is a woman of another race. as a wedding gift, the king gives nathos a magic jewel, a gemstone of immense power. after the wedding, nathos gives the gemstone to conan, and it starts making him do crazy things. he meets the woman he loves, but is so focused on the gemstone that he refuses to leave shadizar. he and jehnna run away, but he is soon captured by the evil zula. she and her daughter use the gemstone to resurrect the king and destroy the prince. nathos is killed. the gemstone is destroyed, but the terrible influence of the gemstone is still present. cona is now in love with nathos and leaves to find his family.
conan is having a vision of valeria, his love who was killed by taramis. he goes to the temple of the serpent, to find zula. he is attacked by a giant serpent and rescued by zula. conan kills the serpent and takes its tongue. he finds the gemstone and brings it back to zula. he goes back to the jungle, where he saves jehnna from a tribe of cannibals.
and yet what once was pantomime is suddenly upstaged by 100,000 extras, some of them dancing. the sense of grand, ornate pageantry is back but it’s now accompanied by a gushing soundtrack as conan swaggers down a streetscape, flanked by a glorious cavalcade of fantastical creatures. such is the initial exhilaration of the chase that we might find ourselves forgetting that this is a historical fantasy film.
the spectacle of conan the barbarian(1982) is one of the most singularly overblown of all the 80s fantasy movies. at a time when the very idea of a sword and sandals epic was already starting to look like a quaint idea, director john milius and co-screenwriter oliver stone managed to, in spite of themselves, to start something new. their movie is best known for the over-the-top fantasy sequences that are the stuff of legends, but their script is a study in the use of the sword. this is a movie that has sword fights, and wrestling fights, and all kinds of unconventional action, but it is also a study in how to use the weapon most effectively. milius uses the sword to great effect, as he did in the sword fight between conan and the ogres that opens the film. for the most part, milius does not bother with flashy sword or spear or axe or arrow fights. they are there, of course, but usually they are presented in a straightforward, or at least a single-minded manner.
conan the destroyer is the second film in the conan series and it is inspired by robert e. howard’s conan stories. conan and his now-adult son enter a land controlled by a general named nerak, who is in the process of conquering neighboring city states. conan is captured and imprisoned in a tower where he is forced to fight nerak’s giant and fire-breathing champion, a behemoth named valuska. conan wins the fight and kills the behemoth, but not before valuska knocks him from the top of the tower. conan lands in the city below, and as he races through the city, he happens upon a young woman named sela who is being stalked by a wild animal. conan attacks the animal, kills it and rescues the girl. their relationship develops as she befriends conan, and he teaches her swordplay. conan then leaves her in the city, but the next day returns for her. he later travels to a nearby village where he meets its leader, kalidor, and helps kalidor to free his people from a giant snake. sela and conan eventually end up in the dungeon where they meet a wizard named akiros. akiros helps conan to free the people of the dungeon and they escape. then the wizard gets killed by valuska, who is now controlled by nerak. after the wizard’s death, conan and sela decide to leave for the city of kalimah. while traveling, they are captured by a band of brigands. conan steals a sword and kills one of them, and then the brigands attack him. after the brigands are defeated, conan and sela escape to kalimah. they later meet kalidor and his army, and kalidor leads them to the city of ophir, where they learn that nerak has sent a group of assassins to kill kalidor. conan and sela attack the assassins and kill them. conan and sela, then, leave for the city of taggart where they find kalidor and his people. at kalidors court, the villainous nerak tries to seize power, but conan reveals that nerak is sela’s father. nerak then orders his assassin to kill conan and sela. conan and sela find the assassin and kill him. they then learn that kalidor’s wife, sela’s mother, is in fact nerak. sela fights her mother, but in the process of killing her mother, sela is mortally wounded. kalidor’s army eventually defeats nerak’s army, and nerak is forced to flee the city of kalimah. kalidor and conan then lead the army to take the city of ophir. nerak sends valuska to attack the army, but kalidor defeats him and conan kills him. conan and kalidor then enter kalimah and free the people. conan then finds sela, who has died, and spends his last days with her.
