Cream was on their way up. Their debut album was a huge success, getting them to number 3 in the US and selling over 1.5 million copies, and they followed it up with Cream Again, which reached number 1 in the Billboard 200, and the high-water mark of the band in popularity and acclaim. For their next album, however, Eric Clapton withdrew from public performance, and thus they would never reach their peak as a band.
As such, it would be nice to see one release with the band on a consistent level, but they’re really only at their best on the live level. The Cream With Eric Clapton: Live at Montreux (2CD/1DVD) is the last release to reach double digits in sales and critical acclaim for any Cream album, and it even reached number 9 in the Billboard 200 chart. A lot of people around the world don’t know half of what Cream did, but this release is the best place to start.
The title says it all. This is a live performance from the Montreux Jazz Festival, 1972, and it starts with the opening track, “I Feel Free”. Then alternate versions of “Long Distance Runaround” are played, followed by the killer versions of “Badge” and “White Room”. Then the highlight, the definitive version of “Sunshine of Your Love”. Then an encore of “Badge” from which the extended version is taken. I feel that this is the definitive version of “Badge,” because it is just as good as the studio album version. Everyone knows the studio version, but this version just sounds more bluesy to me. Then a massive concert version of “Rock And Roll Music”, another ultimate rendition of “Sunshine of Your Love”, then the album version. This is really a must for the serious Cream fan, because it shows off their live chops. It’s one of the best live versions ever, and the extended version is even better. It’s the definitive “Sunshine of Your Love.” If you think the studio version is great, wait till you hear this! It just blows me away and I love it. After this, the band plays “I’m So Glad” and then the killer version of “Nellie the Elephant”. Then “White Room” is played at full volume, followed by the great version of “Jack Straw”.
