De Bellis Antiquitatis (DBA)
, the fast playing and cost effective system originally developed by the Wargames Research Group. DBA is a small scale skirmishing system for light to medium forces (between 6 and 18 figures) on a hex based map. Most armies are played out in an hour or two with a base game time of about 90 minutes. The system is designed so that a new player may enjoy a basic introduction to the wargame within a single game. If you know your miniature games then you should find DBA quite straightforward. This is particularly so if you are familiar with European gaming.
You have your figures in plastic, that is cheap but flexible. Your units are by far the most important part of the game. If you are playing skirmishing you are playing with formations that allow you to extend and contract your force so that it can move rapidly away from or into contact with an enemy one. However, your forces are not mixed units. Differently armed units in a formation may move together and fire independently. It is easy to reconfigure your forces and so maintain surprise. The figures are highly flexible and allow you to concentrate your firepower in good situations (and away from them) and to disperse it under conditions of disadvantage. DBA does not allow you to command your own forces. A game may involve you dealing with the other forces around you and even trying to bluff.
Long ago I became disillusioned with the rules issues that have influenced my wargaming life. In an effort to be able to play large scale battles with small numbers of units, and to overcome the unit limits imposed by DBA, I wanted to dispense with DBA’s entire mechanism of units and battle fatigue. Instead I wanted to work with the wargame elements I liked and to use a system that allowed me to record my progress. In the end I settled on the ‘battle of Waterloo’ as the sample scenario for the system. I wanted to add a series of rules and appendices to simulate the effects of battle fatigue and of scale of operations. These were ‘De Bellis Antiquitatis’ (DB.A.) the idea of the rules themselves is not new, having been first published in 1977 but the system was reformatted and presented in a ‘user friendly’ manner by Phil Barker, one of the first authors of the DBA system. The system I developed was divided into three volumes : “De Bellis Antiquitatis” (DB.A.) and “De Bellis Multitudinis” (DB.M.) for battles and “De Bellis Renationis” (DB.R.) for any campaign or war. The rules are laid out in a series of books that fit, together with the rules as they were originally, in the format of a “wargame.”. The small scale infantry units (or armies) of DB.A. were intended as a basis for games up to 1000 men. DB.M. extended this to 5000 men and DB.R. extends it to over 200,000.
