the story is fantastic. tarantino uses the opportunity to deal with many of the issues surrounding slavery. he frequently reminds you that the slave trade was a very lucrative business, and has a lot of very disturbing anecdotes to tell. he even takes the opportunity to discuss the importance of education. the first half of the film is nothing but pure cleverness and humor. it is almost over the top in the cleverness and cleverness, and this includes the dialogue. it is clearly so over the top, that it becomes cliched and kinda boring, almost a parody of itself. but once we get to the half way point, we all know he is going to get serious. and he does. this is where he finally gets to deal with the subject matter of the movie. once the plot is set up in full, we are all on the edge of our seats waiting for django to escape. the only problem is, we know he is going to escape, but what we don’t expect is that he will kill so many people along the way. the actual escape is amazingly crafted, and the film deals with some fairly poignant issues. tarantino has created a brilliantly entertaining adventure film with a message that will take a while to sink in. i am completely behind the work that he is doing, and i am so glad he is making movies like this.

the film may be, in many ways, a little too long, but that does not make it bad at all. it actually is a real joy to watch, and while tarantino is at his very best when he is crafting a tight little thriller, this is a movie with fun and wonderful dialogue, intriguing characters, and a plot that you cannot help but follow. and when it comes to comedy, you cannot beat christoph waltz as the most likable, honest, and charismatic bounty hunter in the world, and as a result he steals every scene he is in. when the film finally gets to the murder scene at the end, it makes sense. all of the characters have their own motives, and it makes sense that they all have their own reasons for their actions. in the end, it is django who sacrifices his own life for the greater good. i am sure quentin and the coens could not have pulled this off without the help of the marvelous christoph waltz. he almost single-handedly makes django unchained a truly memorable film.
