Photoshop’s learning curve is steep and makes it hard to understand how it works at first. Make sure you get a crash course in Photoshop’s editing tools before you start using it. Adobe Photoshop (formerly named Photoshop Elements) is available for both the Mac and Windows platforms. It has a fairly steep learning curve and usually takes a little bit of time to master. We talk more about this in Chapter 1. Although you can use other editors, such as Corel and Paint Shop Pro, with the same general concepts of layers and overlays to manipulate images, Photoshop has its own proprietary graphics language and is the most widely used image-editing software in the world. It has probably been overtaken by a new software product, GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), which is included with some distributions of Linux; however, GIMP has fewer features than Photoshop. Figure 1-2 shows an example of a typical photo. It is quite difficult to manipulate the tiny details in a large image, which is why, in the following sections, we concentrate on local editing in small areas of the photo. Making the Plank the Only One In the following sections, we teach you to manipulate each of the major aspects of a photo, starting with the most important image editing techniques of the 20th century: Creating a new layer: A layer is the fundamental block of your image-editing work. Create a new layer and then use the tools to manipulate parts of it. We explain this technique in greater detail in Chapter 4. Resizing an image: You can enlarge or shrink a photo in two ways: by cropping it or by stretching it. We explain these techniques in detail in Chapter 6. Reducing the image size: With resolution comes size. You can reduce the file size of a photo by using one of the many ways Photoshop lets you do it. We cover this technique in Chapter 7. Offsetting: In Chapter 8, we talk about using the crop tool to crop off the unnecessary or unwanted parts of an image. While some of these limitations have been lifted in recent years, Adobe has always left room for a kind of gray area. There is no support for the functionality of Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, Adobe DNG Converter or any other programs designed to support RAW conversions. Q: Good test coverage for a scheduled job I am trying to get my head around the correct way to code a scheduler in Java. I am hoping that someone could show me a good way to test it, and understand how the scheduler would work. Say that I have a TimeService, which takes a time zone string and returns the current time for that zone. Now I want to make sure that I am not accidentally returning the same time twice.
