I think the best part of the film is the way that Boland cozies them up and encourages Daniela to tell her story; to get her voice out there. Visually, the movie has a lot of texture — the fabrics, the curtains, the structures — but nothing about these spaces feels ornate or the resulting clothes look like anything that havent been made in the past. We get a better sense of a time and place via costume and location, and that’s part of what makes this love story feel so sexy: Daniela, at one point, even lifts up the hem of her dress to show off the garters that she wears to bed every night. This is so not like her. She has no time for that sort of bravado. But it feels deliciously scandalous.

When I think of the space Camilla Dunois seems to inhabit, that’s what I think of. An older, strangely mythic place — larger than life, but totally off the grid. Phantom Thread wants to be a meditation on identity and autonomy, and the way that norms and expectations can distort and constrain us, but the woman at the center of it all is presented as very literally someone on another planet. Lucreman is often melancholy, can sometimes be puzzling, but she never slides off the page (she even gets a song). Those same qualities make the film relatable: The stuff of youth is all around us, but it feels like a different world where other things can happen. The way he tells her about his life, Lucremans narrative journey is stitched together with bits of Camilla and her stories, making them feel like theyres the same thing.

The year is 2031 and in this dystopian society, even going to a party is perilous. People try their best to get out of it, but the only way to do this is to stand out. Why not do the impossible and join the crowd and watch them all in awe at the way they party. If you succeed, well, it means you’re the real party animal.
