Getting a grip on the controls of EastWest Ministry of Rock II isnt hard at all. Within a few seconds of loading the interface, youre on the home screen with 20 buttons to tweak and modify sounds. You can start off with the bare essentials provided by adding custom snares, any drum, drum kit or percussion, custom kick, and custom hi-hat. Each section comes with their own recording approach including studio, live, and compressed room options. Normally, when you plug in the virtual drum kit, youre greeted by a vast array of preset kits from the kit list. EastWest allows you to choose your own kit from their massive library or make your own custom kit. But EWS gets nitty gritty in the way of snares. If youre familiar with the demands of a real drummer, youll find its location in the snares tab and snares list a little confusing.

The solo and insert functions allow users to put a particular drum in a particular octave into the sound and theyre not to be confused as equalizers, which are for the bass. In fact, its not unusual to find the bass in EastWest Ministry Of Rock II to sound better than the drums and percussive sounds. High quality plugins can easily add a hint of character and definition to the bass. Its a bonus and not an issue, but it is one of the things youll be hearing in this review.

For the guitarists in the house, EastWest Ministry Of Rock II gives you plenty of options. Standard effects, such as compressor, and stereo reverb, and classic amp simulations are applied to the guitar to make it sound like a wailing blues guitarist from the 50s.

the electric guitar sound is varied and true to the instrument, although it doesnt quite do justice to the range of tones the real thing can produce. in addition, eastwest has included more acoustic guitar samples than youll find on most other libraries, and what is included is good quality. the bass is equally as diverse, and although i could not find a single clip to sample from, i did find a whole bunch of snazzy presets. there is enough bass content in these that you could process these through a compressor if you so wished. if thats not your bag, then most of the presets will be fine.
if youve ever tried to get the guitar sounds out of a sampler, youll know that its a very difficult thing to do. eastwest have pulled this off brilliantly, and theyve supplied more than enough sounds to make any guitarist happy. in fact, they even include a metronome, allowing you to play along to a rhythm. you can also play the sounds through the 3 band eq and even tone match the instrument, which is quite a nifty feature. more samples will be required for this to be really useful, but the library isnt short on samples.
first up, weve got the hi-hats. theyre very, very fat and you can even change the down-sides of the cymbal bell from the standard sizzle to a crisp, metallic sizzle (or have the cymbal blow up like a real sizzle) via an onboard lfo. have fun with the ratios of wet to dry sounds, to create a set of hi-hats that can alter the sound from deep, fuzzy, to loud and crisp. with the special hi-hat control in morii, you can control the volume, envelope, and velocity of the hi-hat, as well as having a special reverb effect available to the hi-hat on any of the four main drum pads. for the open hi-hat, you can select a real or virtual pitch bend, and also add attack and decay to spice up the sound. the drum pads are fairly easy to use, with the snare pad being a standard snares drum kit, the kick being a standard kick drum and both the hats and toms being the usual eastwest menu-based controls, although the hats offer the special reverb effect, while the snares offer velocity control. the main problem is that the snares dont offer any velocity control, so youd have to use the filters to create a realistic sound.
