Three buddies are in a rather out-of-the-way region after their car breaks down. They say they’ve been directed to the nearest town, which may or may not be on the other side of the earth. They know it’s a long distance, so they decide to take up their swords and begin their journey.

Until this point, the game was an excellent fantasy title. It has a unique atmosphere, with a very vivid, expressive art style. The story is simple but engaging. The characters don’t feel too over-the-top or silly, all of whom appear to have something to say and do. The mission statement of “play a fantasy game as you like, with various settings and various situations” is met with aplomb.

Unfortunately, Tarnished is merely a retread of another game it tried to simulate, which proved to be a failure. First of all, the world that the characters explore is mostly barren, with low-res landscapes lacking in variety. There are some exceptions, but they generally only lead to a few monsters. Otherwise, the characters can eat or drink to move up a level. While this may sound like a good idea, you get a lot of repeated meals and few new enemies. When a pair of enemies get close, there’s a single response, which is a show of force by all players. There are only five enemy classes in the game, with only a few permutations on their appearances and stats. No new enemy types were added, and all enemies seem to be variations on the same game.

Even the dungeons that are supposed to be a particular kind of fun environment feel like they were recycled from another game, this time Minecraft. Dungeons can be filled with caves and collapsed areas or can be completely enclosed. The latter are much harder to navigate than the former, as anything but the shortest way is blocked by a variety of low-quality enemies. GamePad and online play makes exploration of these caves possible, but it doesn’t come without a caveat. You’ll see a cryptic warning that your backup won’t work, but there is no indication what the problem is. Being forced to explore caves with the medium difficulty setting, I spent all my time on the lower difficulty setting. Furthermore, the fact that save games are limited to five characters and ten dungeons per person makes it rather difficult to use with friends.
