the cockpit is very well thought out and easy to use. you have a full array of sensors to see outside the plane – radar, threat warning, and weather information are all easily accessible. unlike many flight sims, you can actually see the objects you shoot down. the hud is well laid out, and is simple to use. you can see all the available systems on board and how they are set up. there’s a full range of controls for the various systems, and it’s easy to set all the control parameters to what you like. you can switch off almost everything except the air-to-air radar, air-to-ground radar and the hud, if you really want to. while the hud is fairly transparent and not easy to see, it is very clear and straightforward to use. this is particularly good news for people with poor vision. there is also the ability to display enemy radar if you have the software installed, although i found it to be a bit faint and not particularly useful.
the sound effects are both numerous and good. the cannon shots have a satisfying punch, and the missile shots are very audible. i did notice that on the rare occasions that i was hit by the enemy, my plane would sound like it was a little bit damaged. this is strange, and i wonder if novalogic have realised that this is a bug and are working on a fix. it’s not a deal-breaker, though, and the game’s overall sound quality is very good. there are numerous menus that you can get into via hot keys, and these have crisp and clean graphics. unlike most sims, you can play the game in 3d and 2d at the same time, and the game runs in full 3d mode. it’s a very impressive feat for such a small game.
