She said students from big companies like Boeing and NASA visit St. Michaels sometimes, so they may be available to work on projects with students. She also said that engineering jobs can be very creative and fun. Many students do research or invent things. She said students should learn a lot about science, math and computer science throughout high school, but that engineering is the career for people who are good at thinking, designing and thinking about how their designs work.
I think that after college, you want to do work where you are part of a team, because if you find a research area you love, you will be working with other people who love it just as much. Teams, and work in teams, help you learn to work on a real project. On my first research project, we learned so much in a year, and in the second year, we started planning for our own research.
I am grateful for the research community in Little Rock and the amount of people that came to help me. I think the depth of knowledge is amazing. This is a setting where you can learn new things daily, in little or big ways. It was a real eye-opener. The support I received as a first-year grad student was outstanding.
The first year is an important time for students, and for the research community itself. We have a full year to develop new skills, and we have the opportunity to learn how to be effective team members.
