and with that, i think we wrap up this issue of airports with a couple of pictures. these are both from the same airport but have a vastly different look and feel. the one on the left is fsx standard with a 3d effect applied whereas the one on the right is the flat look. to see the full variety, please check out the slideshow of the alpine airports. a link to this is down the right hand side. you will see what i mean.

i have been working on a vfr description of innsbruck airport’s a/c in fsx. some of the approach images were courtesy of bill tozier with the rest being courtesy of jim vile and the airport. this airport is a complex with 3 runways serving the airport which i have converted to vfr. the total length of the runways is 7,500 feet and is operated by lufthansa. the runways are as follows: runway 31 is a 3,000 ft s/n 2529 to 2446.

as i fly in to innsbruck, i head along the approach course using the updated ppr and atc calls and i honestly feel as if i am on a real approach to the airport, i don’t miss a beat and all the way in, all the way out and i do not remember this ever happening before.

sorry guys, your timing really beat me, but i found the offending file, believe it or not, in a.. brazilian!!! airport scenery folder. after deleting it, the remaining ais at lowi started behaving a lot more as expected in jim vile’s lowi environment. no more ai cessnas and mooneys flying!! vfr!! between lowi and brazil!! also, all remaining (ifr) ai’s now follow jim vile’s approach routes correctly and i must, at this stage, apologise to jim for initially suspecting his fantastic piece of work when all along, the problems were caused from within my own fs9.

one way to install this approach is to copy the approach files from the wwb map folder to x:\user\user\maps\innsbruck\innsbruck.iml. you will have to play with the aircraft and pois/mountain terrain to get everything right. to do so, fly to innsbruck low and make a few approaches.
the airport in itself is not a hard airport to fly with, the runway is long and the approach is only a shade over 400 meters (1,300ft). as an lod airport the wings of the aircraft have the same scale on the runways and the terminal area. in-runway markings and approach lighting are all in close scale, so it’s not easy to see that, but you can use the runway markings in the terminal and expect it to be just as accurate as the air traffic control areas.
i have to admit i had reservations about testing the title on my wacom tablet, as on another sim i’d previously had problems and have tried from previous years, but this was not the case. innsbruck is not the easiest airport to fly in, and i was flying on a cessna citation x to take advantage of the strong nose down elevator effect, and was very pleased with the results. in the video i mention i was early in the run up to summer, and have just seen the last few snow storms which has made it perfect for testing. due to the higher ground clearance and slightly lower weight of the aircraft, conditions on the approach to lowi can be quite gusty, but this is ideal weather for snow and ice, and you will see the aircraft trim up and sleet and fly over the mountains into the valley. there is a bit of nice canyon scenery and some lovely lakes as the runway crosses lake traun, which i think is part of the reason for the variation in challenge at different times of the year.
