i came to a decision about the beat thang after a while. i decided that itwasn’t really for me. i didn’t want to deal with the glitches and my experience was that the available sounds were just not that interesting. it’s in the nature of the kit that the quality of the sounds is less than perfect, and it’s most noticeable when you’re working with the effects. but in the absence of a decent library, that’s just the way it is. i also found it too hard to find good quality sounds that i could sample cleanly and keep sounding great for a long period of time. the only sounds worth sampling and keeping are the ones that you can use to produce something that sounds amazing right from the outset, and the beat thang doesn’t offer that.
while i would never say that it’s a bad drum machine, i think that the beat thang really misses the mark when it comes to being a serious contender in the dj market. the sound quality isn’t that great, the effects are just messy and not really interesting, the startup and load times are horrendous, and there’s no real use for the hardware beyond just producing drums.
the beat thang is a great piece of hardware, but it’s not for everybody. if you want a drum machine that sounds really good, look no further than the native instruments kontakt sampler for more information on what’s going on under the hood. and if you want a drum machine that sounds great from the outset and is fun to use, look at the paul oakenfold drum machine. that’s what the beat thang is trying to be, but it just misses the mark. if you’re after serious and professional sampling, then the beat thang just isn’t your cup of tea.
