High production value, gripping storytelling, and smart character development are a rare combination, but HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ succeeds in all three. The second season has a smaller cast than last year, but manages to maintain the status quo of the previous season, and does a good job of keeping the stories equally compelling. ‘Game of Thrones’ may be more for fans of fantasy and Game of Thrones books rather than general TV watchers, but there’s no disputing its quality. If you like quality TV, you should definitely own this set.
A complete season of ‘Game of Thrones’ on Blu-ray would be like the richest, savviest man on the planet. One that you don’t have to try to impress because it speaks for itself. HBO has been steadily dropping ‘Game of Thrones’ season after season, and now they’re just dropping a full, complete season. The show has been building up to the final battles of Westeros and the Red Wedding since season one, and in ‘Game of Thrones: The Complete Second Season’ we finally get to experience it all. There aren’t any’stand alone’ episodes here, as the plot is all tied up in a bow by the end of season one. What we are getting is an entire season with over eighty episodes and four and a half hours, presented in 1080p and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. This is the best possible way to enjoy the show, and we should all be thankful it wasn’t cut short by the network. With so many characters to follow and crazy plotlines to keep track of, it’d be too easy to miss any of it. I couldn’t.
It’s tough to describe what exactly sets ‘Game of Thrones’ apart from other scripted, big budget programs on television. For one, it’s really good. It’s a combination of good acting, good script, good production, good direction, and genuinely interesting storytelling that draws you in and doesn’t let you go.
