This game is about mining resources in order to build your empire and build a powerful economy. The main difference from minesweeper is that when you click in a building, it mines that resource. You click on workers and give them resources to do the mining for you. If you run out of gold, you lose. In other words, your gold equals the number of buildings you have in production.
To mine a resource, click on a building until it mines that resource and then click on a worker. Click on the worker to give it a resource. While at the mines, click again to assign resources to the next rank of workers.
You start with 1000 gold. At levels 1-3, you can have up to five buildings. For level 4 you can have up to ten. For level 5 you can have up to 20. At each prestige level you unlock new building types and worker ranks.
You start with one type of worker and the same amount of resources to feed them. You hire one worker at a time. Each worker can mine up to five resources per click.
When you hire a worker, you unlock a new worker type for the next prestige level. For example, Level 1 worker types are all level 1. But level 2 workers can mine three, level 3 can mine five and so forth.
On subsequent levels, workers have different stats. For example, your Level 2 miner can mine between one and three resources at a time instead of between one and five like your Level 1.
After the first few levels you start running low on gold. You can still purchase buildings with gold. These buildings will speed up your resource extraction or in some cases, you can build defensive buildings. You can also purchase upgrades for your buildings and workers. When you have enough gold to support all of your buildings, you start focusing on prestige.
Along the way, you level up and gain prestige. You can’t go back to Prestige level 1 once you have reached it.

Goldmine takes place in a post-apocalyptic Mad Max style world. Five factions control the wasteland: Nomads who live out of caravans, the Militia that defend against the nomads, the Sandmen who steal gold, the Empire that attempts to maintain control over the wasteland and finally a band of outlaws that have a rep for being pretty good at blowing things up.
While out on a hunting trip with their Nomad allies, you and your group stumble into a mine. You immediately notice that something is wrong. It has 6 levels, with 4 different scenarios for each level. 1 has the main quest, and the other 3, in chronological order, have the minigames that you win prestige for in the game. With four of those, you have a choice of choosing one path, you have a choice between two paths, or you get to choose a third. There are twelve of those. Then, the last scenario has you make a choice between the three paths that you chose in the previous three scenarios.

Goldmine runs in a singular window. Several controls are shown on the left. Some are obvious, such as digging and mining. Others are somewhat hidden, such as applying prestige. Space is also used to hide tools and watch the in game time.
If you click on the shovel, miners will be summoned to your mine. They will mine the specified number of times (digging) and return the gold to you. You can then spend that gold to buy a (hopefully) more useful tool. If you click on the shovel again, more miners will be summoned. If you click in the waiting area, then more tools will be available, but the miners will be unavailable, most likely for a while.
Each level is divided into an area where you can mine and where workers and tools sit. To mine or to purchase new tools, click on the shovel. Each shovel button takes a certain time (about one second, depending on the shovel) to mine or purchase, and the miners are controlled by a timer. If you click on the shovel while the workers are active, they will move along the current path (digging) and return. When they are done, you will see the number of gold, with a message like, “You have enough gold to buy a shovel”. Clicking, “Buy shovel”, will spawn one more worker.
After the tool is purchased, you can switch tools by clicking “Buy” again, which will add one level of prestige to the shovel. Each shovel has about 2 levels of prestige. To switch a shovel, click on the “Shovel” icon in the top right corner.
After mining, you can purchase new tools by clicking “Buy tools” in the top left corner. The tools are stored in the “Tools” window. You can purchase tools with gold, or gain prestige by spending skill points, which you get by gaining prestige by using the shovel and spending gold. Tools are controlled by a timer as well.
Levels are endless. The “trading window” is accessible via the top left icon, which can be used to trade gold for prestige and vice versa.
