regardless of any region restrictions that may apply to the final product, the quality of the image, rather than being the cinematographic masterpiece that it was on the final release, is considerably down. it was one of the first major missteps with the technology, and the movie is an example of how you can’t hope to replicate what you can achieve with the latest 1080p camcorder, even with hd master material.
while the pic is good in terms of getting the color right and the like, i wouldn’t expect any movie on the market today to be 100% flawless on a 1080p screen, and the improvements over the dvd version are small at best. in fact, the movie still has many of the same issues that it had on the dvd.
we got our first taste of ‘harry potter and the philosopher’s stone’ just last month with the hd dvd release. this momentary lowpoint in ‘sorcerer’s stone’ is certainly better in a number of ways (aside from the uncomfortably loose characterizations), but even then, the audio performance is quite good. the tinny textures and whiny treble are lessened somewhat, and the mix is remarkably free from the walls of noisy effects and ambient music that so plagues the dvd version. the film’s slightly more muted palette is also a welcome alternative, and the soundtrack is kept intact (with the exception of the score that was recorded specially for the film). if only every harry potter release was so equal!
‘harry potter and the chamber of secrets’ started two different audio careers for harry potter. the film’s original pre-mix is much softer than that of the hd dvd release, which means that a new 5.1 dolby digital mix must be created from scratch for the first time. the newly mixed stereo mix still maintains the darker aesthetic of the original, but the 5.1 surround is loaded with extra effects and effects processes. the mix is especially engaging during the film’s climactic finale, with a massive, wall of sound effect blasting throughout the entire surround speaker system. as though it weren’t enough that the home theater is flooded with the sound of flying shards of bone, the mix also has tom schiller’s score driving the action with a healthy dose of dark ambient music. while the original mix sounds a bit thin, this new mix is undoubtedly more exciting.
