the ers system was one of the game’s biggest innovations, but it also introduced a few problems. one of the biggest ones is that it is somewhat game-breaking. if you dont do things right, you can be blown up in the first couple of missions. thankfully, we have an awesome community to turn to. the biggest problem with the ers was that it wasnt properly implemented in the xbox version of hawx. this caused some problems for people who had previous experiences with the xbox version of hawx, and also caused problems for those of us on pc. microsoft just gave the pc version a downgrade, removing the ers completely.

originally, the pc version of hawx had its ers system functioning as intended, but the xbox version did not. so, when i started playing the pc version of the game, the ers system was working as intended. and then, when i eventually got the xbox version of the game, the ers system was working as intended. the original ers in the pc version was actually a little buggy, though. for example, when you were out of missiles, your rockets would fly around a lot, making them virtually impossible to shoot down. and, while you could shoot down missiles, the ai would fire them at you if you didnt return fire. so, while you could block their missiles, it wasnt very practical.

the xbox version of hawxs ers system was better than the pc version. there were still some problems, though. for example, if you timed it right, you could fly underneath your enemy and perform an ers manoeuvre on their tail. however, your guns wouldn’t fire. if you timed it wrong, you couldnt do any ers manoeuvres at all. so, you had to think ahead.

HAWXs graphics were so good that it stands to this day as one of the best looking Xbox-era games. The locations looked fantastic, and the levels, while repetitive in their overall structure, were interesting enough to keep you coming back. The style of combat put you right in the thick of things, making you feel every impact of even a simple, but prolonged gunfight. The framerate never faltered, even when two dozen rockets were being fired at you from a surface-to-air missile interceptor.
One of my favourite features of the game was the inclusion of weather systems, primarily in ground vehicles, but there were a few that came in the air. Weather conditions could affect flying speeds and visibility, or in extreme cases, cause lightning strikes that would destroy the surrounding terrain. Aside from the weather, the game also included support for networked play. HAWX allowed you to play with your friends over local networks (with the obligatory XBox Live integration), and even look up into the sky and check out the geosynchronous satellites above the planet.
The first of the sequels, HAWX2, launched on the Xbox 360 in 2005. Its story was fairly similar to HAWXs, and covered the same timeframe. Some of the developers went on to work on the now-cancelled Doom 3 BFG Edition, while others became staff artists for a while before joining Ubisoft Shanghai. While HAWX2 improved on a lot of things from the original, it failed in others. Felt a bit like a poor man’s Ace Combat 1 or the first Silent Hunter.
HAWX2s graphics were, once again, stunning, as if to prove that the Xbox 360 could handle high-end graphics with ease. One glaring difference between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game is the graphics settings. When playing the Xbox 360 version, youre left to set a variety of colour tones and textures yourself, while the PS3 version has auto-tweaking. HAWX2s environments are vastly improved since the first game in the series, largely due to improved textures and new geometry. There are also more cityscapes with the use of alpha-blending, which should allow for better-looking reflections on materials.
