a great bit of film history is also thrown in through the tail of the credits, as we see the characters in the 1970s, including michelle yeoh, yuen biao, and more. the last shot of the movie is the only one that i remember all the way through, and i was able to recognize almost every actor from their roles in the original.

on a personal level, i was really lucky to watch ninja ii as a kid. my parents would often let me watch the nikkatsu action movies on repeat, which were some of the only things that had nothing to do with sports or animals that i was interested in when i was a kid, and watching ninja ii was one of the only things that could actually make me feel like i was in a movie, and therefore better, than some of my peers. it was a completely alien experience for me to watch it as a middle schooler, and it still holds up today.

after the first two ip manfilms, it became clear that the universe that director wilson yip built for the franchise was ripe with potential. ip man 3 was a tidy little caper that was far more interested in the motivations and relationships of the characters than it was in the fights, and that was enough to get ip man 3to spin a soft, satisfying story. while ip man 4isn’t quite as successful in that regard, it still finds a way to make a very fun fight movie even if it does so in a sometimes absurd and sometimes just plain weird way.

we came to learn that the final showdown between ip man and his former allies happens in a rural village in india, where he saves the lives of three young sisters in a tight set of circumstances that are both emotional and dramatic. the first film focused on ip man as an underdog, much like the most american and pawns; and this ip man 4is more of the same, seeing ip man not only return to his roots as a martial artist, but also be recognized as a hero in the eyes of his friends and mentors. ip man and his team face numerous opponents in the finale, but ip man himself is the only one who hasnt evolved over the course of the franchise.

even if ip man 4is the weakest in the series, it is the most representative, as the title character is the first chinese person to lead a series of martial arts films. the films covers his efforts to train his students (karen mok and donnie yen) from a very young age, as well as his efforts to train one of his students, johnny lawrence, to become a true master of the wing chun style of kung fu, or hua jiao quan. one of the best parts of ip man 4 is the cast of actors that are able to deliver in their roles. the whole of the cast are adept actors, and each brings their own flavor to the film, which lets them play off of each other. while the ip man movies are a celebration of bruce lee, the filmmakers also give proper respect to the roles lee played in the creation of the ip man movies, as well as the legacy that lee left behind. in fact, the ip man films are probably the closest thing to a true biography of bruce lee that we will ever see. the whole film was shot on location in china, and the film makes a point of showing that lee trained in various martial arts styles in addition to his training in wing chun, while also giving proper credit to the different styles that lee practiced. in the end, the movies even give tribute to lee himself, with a scene where lee and his mentor, wong jack man, are shown practicing together. in it, lee gives a demonstration of his skill in the style of wing chun, and man gives a demonstration of the skill of his own style, creating a tribute to bruce lee as a kung fu legend. ok, so theres a cartoon going on here, but not quite as far as you might think. the director of sunshine and hail, caesar! reunites with his muse and co-writer of sunshine, la la land helmer damien chazelle for his next project. in this musical drama, chazelle (music and lyric) directs, produces, and co-writes the story with his two fellow writers, as well as performing the songs. the story focuses on two french teens in new york city who meet and fall in love after being separated at birth. their lives become entangled in a complex intergenerational romance that spans decades as they try to trace their roots. the film also stars actress rachel mcadams, musician john legend, and emmy and tony winner mahershala ali. 5ec8ef588b
