Brain drain is a term coined by the game industry for programmers moving from one company to another. One of the most notable brain drains in the history of gaming is that of the Ultima series, which brought in some of the industrys most famous names, such as Brian Moriarty and then-smaller GameLabs co-founder Richard Garriott, to create a series of games that eventually dwarf any other in its genre. As Garriot puts it, Ultima wasnt a world-changing series in a month, and I didnt want to just churn out a bunch of games that were just like what we had been doing up till then. What I wanted to do was to create a new kind of game so we could see what was possible. I believe I did that with Ultima IV, and if I am wrong and others did it first, I would love to know where and when they did it. In any case, Ultimas take on the genre of the Elder Scrolls, turning Morrowind into a sprawling fantasy empire, using the same engine as a very early iteration of Counter-Strike, yet stripping out the horrific commercialism that infected the online arena shooter. The result was a return to the classic design of fantasy roleplaying games and often inspiring developers of similar size and budget, such as Dungeon Siege II and the Dark Souls series.
I guess its always a good thing to have a collection of things you enjoy, and I expect Flash games will only grow in popularity as younger users discover the value and longevity of these games. Even if Flash doesn’t live on the web as some have suggested it will, it has certainly helped shape how gaming will be done in future. That said, I dont spend a lot of time thinking about Flash these days, as I am more focused on what I do for a living and haven’t played an Flash game in quite a while.
