the first half, at least, is much more entertaining and ambitiously ambitious than the cringe-inducing sequel jumanji: welcome to the jungle (2017). jake kasdan has been trying to get this right for a long time, and at one point he had a real go at it in new york. in 2011, kasdan and stars dwayne johnson and kevin hart were in the middle of an intense dinner when they had a breakthrough. they decided that if the third film in the series was gonna be good, they had to find a way to entertain audiences without relying on the same tricks. they realized they had to take risks, shake things up and play around with the idea of time travel. welcome to the jungle began as a set of ideas with no actors, no script and no director. it was a difficult process, but one that kasdan, johnson and hart were committed to.
the new jumanji: welcome to the jungle (2017) comes from a very different vantage point. its a live-action adventure that deals with the issues of trying to fit in with your new friends, and it all happens on a real remote jungle island in the real world. its a refreshing change of pace, and a move that takes no one back to the land of the lion king and the film tarzan. its also a film with some very good laughs.
the film is based on chris van allens (kevin hart) book, jumanji: welcome to the jungle (2017). its a relatively simple origin story that unfolds in a way to reflect how the characters met. its a great way to remind us all that its the new kid in the schoolyard who finds himself the most out of place. the film does go a little overboard with the nostalgia, but its generally well executed. the biggest misstep is a silly subplot about hart inviting his ex-wife (margot robbie) to the island so he can invite his kid (jack black). its a thin excuse for a storyline, and though its an awkward transition, there is also some funny stuff in it.
