Kitb alMilal wa al-Nihal ( Arabic :, The Book of Sects and Creeds), written by the Islamic scholar Muhammad al-Shahrastani (d. 1153 CE ), is a non-polemical study of religious communities and philosophies that had existed up to his time, considered to be the first systematic study of religion. It was written around 1127-1128 and divides religions between sects, which have written doctrines, and creeds which do not.

It is a slightly modified and expanded version of the Tafsir of the Kitab al-Musaraa’ ( al-Shahrastani, 1983 : 9-20) with commentary by al-Mas’udi (10th / A.H. 998-1067), the father of modernist criticism. It is an excellent source of information on the Shaba of the Sunnah, as well as a rather interesting and original commentary on the tenets of Shi’a and other Sunni sects. It is particularly valuable for its discussion of Anba’, the tenth Imam of the Shi’a.
