there is a fourth group of malay manuscripts from the collection of the national museum in paris. these have been associated with a repertory theatre in amsterdam and are preserved in the dutch national archives. i have not been able to find a watermark, but this is not surprising. it is characteristic of paper that the watermark is in the last stages of its life. the watermarks of the italian paper from aceh and sumatra do not appear to be as old as the paper itself. however, in any case it is highly improbable that these papers were brought to the malay world via islamic trade. all these malay manuscripts, however, as already mentioned, are associated with aceh in sumatra, and not with the well established paper centres of pulau pinang, langkawi and chai chee in malaysia. they are found on the west coast of sumatra in the town of langkasuka.
the malay manuscript of greatest interest is the manuscript that is preserved in the royal asiatic society in the british library and is known as the malj, the manuscript of the royal asiatic society of johore, which is also preserved in the national archives of the netherlands. it is described in blagden ( 1930 : col. 697) as “a large sumptuously bound malay manuscript, which is of great value to the historian of malaysia as well as of malay literature. it is the last dated document of the malay language in the 15th century. it is a unique specimen of malay typography, and it contains by far the largest number of malay words hitherto known. the type and style of the manuscript are of a later date than any other existing malay writing which is known to me. i was able to examine it at the time of my visit to malaya in 1955. i have been able to form the following conclusions concerning its history. it was written by raja ali haji, a prince who was one of the rajas of langkasuka who ruled the district until the mid-1860s. its appearance was probably dictated by a desire to perpetuate the text as it was written by raja ali haji. the handwriting is the raja’s own.
