Games released on the iTunes App Store tend to make it onto our list pretty quickly; there’s often a torrent file floating around for it before Apple even rates the game appropriately (and doesn’t approve). RPG Maker VX Ace ($35) was the first of the current crop to hit the market, allowing you to create your own RPG using the rich toolset that comes with it. That means every pixel of your world gets a chance to be textual, from the title of your town to your quest. Don’t ask us how many worlds we’ve made this way; we can’t keep track. We have a single save file, and we don’t even know how many guilds or locations we’ve created; it’d be a miracle if we can remember them all.
The latest RPG Maker title is a daunting prospect. It’s a complete toolkit that allows you to create a game from scratch, and plenty of people have done just that. Whether you create your own adventure, or import an existing project, this toolset allows you to create a fantastic experience. There’s no need for saving discs or CDs; you can just save your files to your PC and they’ll be available on any machine you like.
