According to some estimates, an epic of the Mahabharata which bears the title”itihasa”, as mentioned in the famous Tamil language phrase”achcharanam kathirunthalam”(slang for a story that’s an absolute bore). It is similar to the Sanskrit epics. Now, it’s not known whether this “the Mahabharata” actually existed. However, there is a folk tale that is within the epics of the Mahabharata. The folk tale has been passed on from the bards or the story tellers or the rhapsodists to the epicists or the historians. So, in this folk tale, the sages who built the temple of the god Chandika, found in the town of Kohila. Kohila is a town in North India and it’s about 80 miles from Patna. About 2,500 years ago, in an earlier era. It was an area that was taken over by the Muslim invaders. So, the Muslim invaders, captured the area and made it into a part of their empire. the area came under the Mughal Empire and later came under the British Empire. So the people that built this temple did, 2,500 years ago. After that, everything ceased to be recorded in this area. All we know is that the temple was built by the sages. Also, this story is found within the epics of the Mahabharata. In fact, the epics of the Mahabharata were passed down orally, so this story was passed down orally. So, about 100 years ago, a storyteller or a poet – and we don’t know his name, even or his area – decided to write this story down. This storyteller was a person who lived in a village in northern India and he was one of the visitors to the temple when it was being built. this folk tale was passed down orally for about 2,500 years. Then, it was written down. Then, it was put into this folk tale form. Then, it was put into the epics of the Mahabharata. Then, when the translator who translated this folk tale into English didn’t know what an ‘author’ meant, this storyteller became known as the author of the Mahabharata.
