About Pivot

Pivot was built to help people discover and interact with massive amounts of data in ways that are informative and fun.
When we use the Web today we treat the most fundamental scenarios as separate activities. Search takes us from many things to one, browsing moves us from one thing to another, and recommendations expose affinities that enable us to explore related topics. Can we do better by combining these scenarios into a more unified experience?
Pivot focuses on this intersection, enabling us to learn key lessons while attempting to broadly apply this philosophy to the Web. We hope that Pivot will inspire and fuel transformative experiences across the Web.
At the heart of Pivot are “Collections.” They combine large groups of similar items on the Internet, so we can begin viewing the relationships between individual pieces of information in a new way. By visualizing hidden patterns, Pivot enables users to discover new insights while interacting with thousands of things at once.

Microsoft Live Labs Pivot [Mac/Win]

This is an experimental work in progress.

SciFi.UI.Web.Library 3.0.0
This is an open source SciFi UI Library (3.0.0) that is small and fast to use.
In order to use it you need to create your project using the SciFi Open Source UI SDK. The SciFi UI SDK can be found here

SciFi.UI.Web.Library is a complete UI Library that includes the following:
1) A library of UI controls, which work well with the core theme.
2) Support for several versions of.NET 3.5 and.NET 4.0.
3) Resources, with fonts and CSS included.
4) CSS2 and CSS3 animations.
5) The ability to use pure CSS styles and override them when needed.
6) Skeleton styles included for all controls.
7) Support for Windows XP and Vista (gasp!).
8) Separation of the theme and the layout. This means that you can choose a
layout that suits your needs and use the theme to bring it to life.

The Pivot team at Facebook wants to bring your content to life. There’s a growing need to understand the connectivity between a large number of objects, and to see the relationships between them in new ways. The Pivot team at Facebook also wants to enable you to better harness the power of that connection.
You’re in charge of managing the content on your site. The Pivot team at Facebook wants to give you the data you need to make your content and data both easy to find and to understand. When you publish content, you are uploading data about the items that you are sharing. We want to let you analyze this data, learn about your site, and create better experiences.
To do this, the Pivot team is working on Collections. We’ll let you know what Collections are and how you can use them. We will also give you ideas on how to find, manage, and understand data that you don’t think of as content.
We hope that you will find Pivot useful, so that your users can have great experiences exploring the connections between your items. We will provide you with the tools, for example, to use Collections to help you understand the connections in your site. We also want to help you let the data on your site speak for itself, by giving you ways to present that data in more accessible ways.
Our overall goal is to give you the tools to enhance your content and make your site more powerful. We believe that we can combine the best of the Web with the best of the desktop experience, and that is why we need your help. This is why we’re calling on you to work with us to build a new kind of visual experience.

What’s New In Microsoft Live Labs Pivot?

Pivot is an experiment in applying the design principles of big data to the Web. We asked, “How do we improve the Web experience when you’re dealing with such large volumes of data?” We began with an aesthetic that extends the core interactions of the Web to allow for much larger numbers of things to be displayed on the screen simultaneously.

Challenges:
Pivot is a “middleman” application designed to provide a layer on top of many different tools and sites that use different technologies, not the same. The current state of the web is varied and complex. This complexity is both the strength and challenge for us. We were interested in applying the principles of big data and exploring new models of interaction that can deal with this complexity, but in the process we have also created an app that is quite complex. The app deals with two main areas: the UX and the backend. The UX is the user interface where the user views the data as well as interacts with the app to create collections, views, and item sets. The backend deals with all of the request and persistence of the app.
The UX and backend are both separate and independent. That has proven to be a real challenge when designing the product.

This site has been around for almost two years, and it’s still a work in progress. Its main purpose is to make searching for interesting content on the web more enjoyable. At the moment it uses the Twitter API to detect the frequency of tweets containing a given keyword. The site also periodically crawls the web and detects new content and then uses Amazon’s Mechanical Turk system to verify that it’s a valid URL.
I understand that this sort of content is not necessarily great from a usability point of view. The people who create the site are a small, semi-professional team who do work for hire on contract. They’re not trying to make something accessible to everyone, and to a degree they’re ignoring usability and usability testing to get their work done.
While the content on this site is not necessarily great, the design and concept behind it is pretty awesome. Not only is it easy to use, but it’s clean, simple, and good-looking. I really liked it when I first encountered the site.
While I think the content on the site is low-quality, I also like the concept behind it. You can do something like this yourself to make your own side project. Even if you find a great website, you can combine the content of that site with your own ideas to make something that’s really cool. This is a great way to get inspiration for things that you can make yourself.
