Practical

MIDI Matrix is a useful little MIDI to MIDI switch box. It simply brings the four MIDI inputs into the computer and provides four outputs. It can also filter MIDI events in and out.

Pros:

User friendly

Simple to use

Cons:

Free version is limited to 2 simultaneous MIDI input and output

Shouldn’t the free version do a little bit more than the full version? I know they aren’t exactly the same, but from what I’ve heard so far it should just run as-is for less than the full price.

Another MiniMIDI-Switch with a commutator matrix, which uses the existing MIDI connection in the PC to switch MIDI In and MIDI Out between a matrix of devices (as many devices as the ports). It’s the switch you have to buy, and this mini version is useless.

A commutation matrix is a means of selective data routing. In MIDI Matrix, four input ports (Data In) and four output ports (Data Out) are connected to four commutation matrixes (CMX).
Commutation matrixes enable a multiplexing of the data from the data in ports and data out ports. When the data from a data in port is switched into a data out port it will always be switched for all other data in ports.
Conversely, when a data in port is switched into a data out port, the data in port will be switched into all other data in ports except the data out port.
Thus a MIDI Matrix can be used to route MIDI events from the Data in port (e.g. MIDI Controller) into specific Data out port (e.g. a MIDI out port of an audio application).
