Modo indie VR brings high-fidelity VR modeling and scanning functionality directly into an artist’s native application with full collaboration and customization from Modo’s native AI and tools. You can scan real and physical assets, animate and manipulate geometric and volumetric mesh, and export to any format and format in Modo Viewport including the widely popular OBJ, FBX and Collada (as well as any other format/viewport you can download).
You can also directly export to VR using the Export Data VR menu on any project or object in Modo, or edit your existing content while in VR, directly from Modo’s native UI. Modo indie VR was built with VR in mind, and makes it easy to take full advantage of all the benefits VR and AR will provide for the 3D data in your projects.
Modo indie VR is a product of Foundry Research’s Foundry Connect Center, a research initiative dedicated to making Modo the primary creative application for 3D data used by professionals. The initial version of Modo indie VR will be completely compatible with Modo 2021.

Modo indie is a virtual reality studio based in California that was co-founded by filmmaker Seth Rosenthal and game developer Previn Boekhout, formerly the head of Epic Santa Monica. It’s primary business is creating games and virtual reality experiences (enter VR cinema) for the Facebook-owned Oculus Rift headset. Engadget spoke with co-founder Seth Rosenthal to get some insight on their journey as well as briefly discuss their unique virtual reality experience American Dispatch. This behind-the-scenes look into how games and virtual reality are being made, inside and out, gives our readers some insight into how the future of immersive entertainment is being shaped.

RS: “I’m really excited about what we’re doing at Modo Indie, first and foremost. We are really concentrating on creating high quality VR experience to give people a really amazing road trip with a character they can relate to. We want to create a system where people can actually have the same kind of relationship to a brand as they have with a physical place.”
“We felt with the product we have now and the technology we have, it was really hard for us to make that experience happen with regards to our desktop and mobile experiences. We felt if we really wanted to do something that people would be excited for, it was going to be something really huge, and that’s why we started with PC because we thought even if it was just one gamer, it’s enough of a mass market for us to be successful.
“When we focused on AR, we felt like it had a lot of potential and we’ve always been fans of it and had been building pieces of it in the past. So when we first started building our team, we felt that AR would be really special to try to have a really high quality mobile VR experience and then put the same technology into an AR experience.”
“A lot of organizations are trying to do this, whether it’s a AAA publisher or a platform like Oculus and Quest, but right now, it’s all desktop and mobile. Our thinking was that desktop and mobile is limited as far as global market, but AR has a lot of potential and that might be one of the things that people look at as a boundary.
