i found that this method worked well for me, because i could choose a textbook according to my level in each area. i am not good at grammar and kanji, so the nice and easy so-matome was perfect to me. on the contrary, i dont mind learning tons of words from vocabulary lists, so the was great. as for listening and reading, i mostly needed tons of practice, and the korean textbooks that i chose were just that.
i think that the so-matome is well structured and has good content, but it also looks very light. for example, the part where you learn expressions likely to appear in this or that place/situation is a good idea, but you wont learn enough vocabulary and expressions in my opinion. so-matome is a great textbook if you want to practice listening in a pleasant way, the lessons are short and you can finish the textbook relatively quickly. however, if you study with this textbook only, i think that you will be surprised by the actual jlpttest when you take it. you will find it much harder than anything you have learned in so-matome. if you want to study with this textbook, i recommend that you also listen to as many jlpt practice tests as possible and study with them in parallel.
if you are not a so-matome student, but like the book’s idea and want to challenge yourself, you can take the test without listening to the audio. this is much more difficult, but you will be able to see how your listening skills are like. if you are interested, here are the files you will need:
