i’ve used a variety of techniques to learn the basics of operating system and also understand it more deeply. the first step in learning something is understanding the subject at the conceptual level. this is what we will focus on in these notes. before going into the details of the operating systems, let us briefly discuss its context and the two types of operating systems.
a simple definition of an operating system, the os is a system that runs applications. i will refer to the operating system more simply as the os henceforth. there are two types of operating system. one is hardware/kernel based operating system and the other is a multi-layered operating system which is not a trivial task by any means.
as many of you would have realized, a computer has three major components a processor, memory and a hard disk. these all of these make up the hardware of the computer. every time a computer is turned on a checks are run to determine which of these components are working. the processor usually is always turned on. initially the os loader or the bootstrap loader is loaded into the processor along with some initialization parameters. then the os loader goes to a location to find the bootloader of the next device it should load. the most common device is a hard disk because it can save data.
following the bootloader, the os loader which is located in the hard disk is run. it detects the hardware and initializes the system environment. the last important initialization is to determine the configuration of the operating system itself. when we use a pc, we normally interact with the os using a graphical user interface or a command line interface. there are probably a few more user interfaces but they are less common. this is just for the sake of this introduction. in the windows operating system, we have the graphical user interface which gives us more freedom. we are the ones who are using the computer and can interact with it directly. a bare minimal linux system will provide you with a command line interface and this is how it will be used. one can only use the command line interface if one has a windows compatible system. otherwise it will not work. so the idea of the first two types of os are to provide user friendly interfaces. most of our interactions are with the os and we use the interfaces provided to interact with it. **atomic operation:** a collection of operations on a data item is called an atomic operation, if any one of the operations succeeds, it all succeed; no other operations have a side-effect. an operation is an atomic operation, if its outcome is not affected by the results of other operations; a write operation that overwrites a value is called an update operation. an atomic operation is also called invariant or completely ordered, since the outcome of any atomic operation is completely determined. 5ec8ef588b
