At last year’s SFFS, the festival was a success. Thanks to the directors of “Isara”, Natasa Torjanovska, Rajko Guzek, and Zvonko Buric. The viewers of the film were marvelously receptive to this strange little movie. They laughed at its absurd characters and the surrealism of the story. Perhaps the film doesn’t make it into the Oscar race, but this year it deserves to be discovered by some of the Academy voters. A special thanks to Festival Director Tamas Liszka, program directors Kreet Paljas and Anindita Bhattacharjee, and the rest of the SFFS staff who worked their butts off to make the festival a huge success.
Although you may not have heard of the New York-based directors, Ana Kokkinos and Ross Kauffman, you’ve probably seen their films. The duo have directed a number of memorable indie films such as “Adam, Eve and Steve”, “Reality Bites”, “We’re Back”, “Bleeker Street”, “Desdemona”, and “A Hotel in Bangladesh”, among many others. They have co-written nine feature films. All of their collaborative work is filled with wacky and surprising humor.
“Isara”, in contrast, is a meditation on the life of sixteen-year-old Arina (played by young actress and film scholar Natasa Torjanovska), an aspiring writer who lives with her mother (Dana Meršič), who works in an airport, and her taunting and neglectful father (Nejc Stanioc) who lives away from the family. After an encounter with a philosopher (Filip Pevec) during a student-conference, Arina suddenly begins to question her existence, her parents, and the inevitability of death. Such a struggle leads her to a labyrinth of conjectures on morality and religion, love, identity, and ultimately to despair. The film is inspired by the novel “The Battle of Shaker Heights” by psychologist Evelyn Fox Keller.
The theme of bullying resonates throughout this visually charming work. Willaard is a bully for a living and he is depicted as a short, thin, rotund, blue-collar guy. Yet, as the film progresses, he develops a relationship with Hendrik and becomes much more in control of his machinations. Willem has meltdowns and he takes to banging his head against the wall. Emma is obsessed with the opposite sex and mocks Hendrik for his lack of attraction to her. Much of the comedy is visual, as for example Emma flirts with the beaver farm foreman and the opening moments of the train sequence. And it wasn’t until I read Sean Suhl’s review that I realized the film also included gender role reversal. Willaard refuses to wear a suit even though Hendrik threatens to punch him if he doesn’t. Emmas ex-boyfriend (with whom she has been in love with since she was five), Jan (Eben van Zyl), and the boozing, chain-smoking owl called Mr. Broodje had to get physical with Hendrik, which is why the older man is furious with her at the end. And the film is a triumph of symmetry. The beginning of the film is a documentary of a woman performing a gig at a farmer’s festival. The footage begins with a presentation of the farm’s products (50 chickens, 10 llamas, 2 beavers, 10 goats, 2 rabbits, 5 guinea pigs, 6 roosters, 14 hens) and its owners (Hendrik and Katrina, Emma, Willem, and Jan). The film ends with Hendrik and Katie walking down the railway tracks that fall on top of him. The film can be used as a delightful hour-long family film, a light comedy, and as a thought-provoking and humorous look at bullying. I recommend it. Watch Shaun the Sheep Movie now. 5ec8ef588b
