once the otoliths are in the ‘fixed’ folder, the otoliths are automatically identified and excluded using the spototolith function, which allows otoliths smaller than the maximum threshold to be highlighted and can then be manually selected or excluded. otoliths can also be automatically identified and removed by clicking the back button ( fig. 2 ). the area folders are then renamed to include the country and station name, and saved in a folder called ‘attached’ ( fig. the image data in the ‘fixed’ folder that have been automatically identified and manually selected or manually excluded (using the back button) are then copied to the ‘attached’ folder and saved (fig. 2). the images can also be manually removed from the ‘attached’ folder. the three image folders (‘original’, ‘fixed’ and ‘attached’) can now be copied back to the original folder and renamed ‘raw’ (fig. the otolith image names then become ‘403_1’, ‘403_2’, etc. in a few situations there might be multiple identification numbers assigned to a single image. in these cases, the otolith image data can be checked in the ‘attached’ folder and the otolith can be manually or automatically removed. the workflow can be summarised as follows:

due to the large amount of images, a quick viewing of the images is recommended before moving on to the next step to ease the process.
oftentimes, there is information on an otolith that can be used to eliminate misidentifications or exclude it. for instance, it is not uncommon that two organisms are found in a single morphological station. in such cases, a second person would provide an image of each fish and they could then be compared and excluded if one of the images is seen to be different from the other. often, the otolith pictures are also compared with a size reference (a measurement of the fish) to provide a second confirmation. it is also possible to collect otolith images of multiple individuals of the same species on a single sample, which would be useful for population-level studies.
a quality check should then be performed on the otolith outlines to make sure they are in good shape ( fig. 3 ). there is currently a grey scale rendering of the otolith outlines that allows for a quality check to be performed quickly. for each otolith, a triangle with the names of the three points on the otolith outline that should be checked are displayed as side by side. if the three points are not in the proper order, this can be rectified. otolith outlines could also be rotated by dragging the appropriate dots on the screen and then clicking the ‘rotate’ button. this is particularly important to ensure that the rostrum is at the top of the otolith.
multiband chorus is a real choir effect. not only is it a chorus but it has five bands of harmonics. a middle band is the key to the effect. a band that is completely split apart and low in frequency, completely closed and closed in bass and highs. this band operates as a typical choir. the next band is at the same level as the lower band but is one octave higher which is harmonically related to the low band. again completely open in low frequencies and closed in high. now the next band is two octaves higher than the higher band, but it shares the same characteristics. a complete open band below it and a closed band in the high frequencies. the next band again is the same level as the next band but is a fourth octave higher and so on until the top band. in this top band are no harmonics and the effect is open and very smooth with a very decent sound. the all important middle band is the control knob. it determines the level where the effect starts to sound muffled. at the lowest level it is slightly muffled, at medium level there is a medium effect, at the highest level it is completely muffled. the knob has a very nice response and it’s easy to move the effect to different levels. but, the knob is not a perfect knob. the start of the effect is very soft and the response at the highest level is very soft. when you stop to play with the knob there is a very short delay until you make the knob movement again. when you hold the knob still and wait it will be the normal response again. the multiband chorus has nice flangers and ring and a nice little bubble that produces the harmonics to create the chorus. it has a very natural sound. a string instrument such as a violin or guitar can be used with the multiband chorus to create a choir sound or an organ with the multiband chorus can create a very smooth choir sound. the multiband chorus is a really nice effect and it’s a pity that transient shaper can’t be used with multiband chorus. it would create a very nice choir effect.
