when a movie is magnificent and i have to wait until i’m 17 for it, i feel, well, old. the phantom menace was what you’d call a masterpiece when you’re 15. if you’re not that old, you won’t have that feeling. i’m glad that it was made, and i’m happy it was a surprise hit. i think lucas learned from his mistakes, and i’m hoping his next venture will be a masterpiece.
sometimes we see an old relative unexpectedly; the instant when the past is returned to the present, and the realization that we are all like those dead, flickering figures comes after the surprise of the encounter. that is what it is like for a fan to set eyes on the phantom menace. according to lucas, the goal was to deal with the idea of a new audience, trying to reach as many people as possible. it is the first movie in the series to be made in 3d, and i loved it. i remember being bored through my first viewing of this film, and i was so pleased to pick it back up years later and have a fresh new experience.
the movie might have been a disappointment for those already thrilled with the past two decades of star wars, but there is no question that it has helped a new generation discover space. it was this fantasy, more than the original trilogy, that first drew me to the galaxy far, far away, and it was this sheer wonder that pulled me back years later to the new place of movies that i discovered.
in a universe where movies have become more fast-paced, complex, and unpredictable, it is refreshing to watch a film that feels just like the series the fans love – though, like a real world, it has faults. the phantom menace has no single, overt weakness. more of an experiment in storytelling than a conclusive film, the phantom menace is a perfect introduction to the new kinds of movies george lucas has been making. the original trilogy is still a five-star masterpiece and arguably the best of all time. though it’s impossible to fully appreciate its emotional impact until you’ve seen every one of the prequels, the star wars series will live on as a great example of the genre.
it’s rare that the prequel to the landmark film of a genre is a great film. the more i think about it, the greater my admiration grows. i don’t know if i should feel like a cuckold or a patron. it’s weird to be moved by a movie that doesn’t have peter’s name in the title. not that i don’t have feelings for this film. it’s just that i wonder what else i’m supposed to feel. there are days when i’m sour because we’re still made to pay so much for the great film that aired on may 25, 1977. maybe i should just accept it and enjoy the phantom menace for what it is. (and some of the bad moments make me laugh. i love the scene where watto changes himself; it’s so silly that i find it hilarious. i could never act that ridiculous.) my favorite scene in the movie is the one in which anakin flees into the mos eisley spaceport. he comes out of the pod and stands, gawking, and the only camera moves is the camera’s self-positioning. there’s this picture of a little kid who might be seeing this for the first time, and then he gets up, takes a few steps, and the camera doesn’t move at all. the most fantastic actors of the time played the crew: ralph mcquarrie was the art director; it was his astute observations that allowed the backgrounds to be so glorious. ben burtt supplied the sound effects, john williams the music, and steve carr scored the film. the most artistic achievement of the movie has nothing to do with technology or design. it’s the humans. playing the parts of the antique, the slightly callous, the pathetic, they are all wonderfully nuanced. not just the actors but the locations and the fabrics and the costumes. the people who made the movie knew what they were doing, and they were master craftsmen. 5ec8ef588b
