in chapter ii, the text which is a complete description of floral and faunal drugs of india will provide a basis for pharmacognosy and phytochemistry to those who are interested in this area of study.
chapter iii deals with the curative aspects of herbal drugs (21 pages in length). this chapter describes the preparation, isolation, and identification of most important bio-active principles of medicinal plants described in the text.
fruits, seeds, bark, leaves, and flowers of about 300 plants have been described in chapter iv. chapters iv and v describe pharmacognosy and phytochemistry of fruit and seeds. the fruit and seeds of more than 2000 medicinal plants are described in different sections of the book and in addition to giving general information, the curative aspect of the fruit and seeds is given. some of the medicinal plants described have been used for many ages for various ailments and new therapies are being developed in relation to some of the plants such as the anti-malaria plant. artemisia annua is the only drug from which the malaria parasite is killed. the use of this plant for malaria will continue to grow and many other diseases may be treated or controlled by plants.
in chapter vii, the characteristic and therapeutic applications of the drugs are given and the chapter describes the preparation, separation, and identification of different chemical constituents of crude drugs. the toxic effects of drugs are described with emphasis on the toxicity of lead and chromium compounds. the effects of drugs on the cardiotonics, ototoxicity, and nephrotoxicity are also described in this chapter. the text also includes charts showing the measurement of drug dosages in weight and volume for adults and children.
since traditional islamic medicine has a rich and concentrated literature on modern medical science, the ancient community remains a major source of pharmacological investigation. however, islamic medicine still has many mysteries to be solved and has not yet been realized its full potential [8]. after the arab conquest of mesopotamia in the 7th century, arab physicians played a major role in introducing and stimulating the study of pharmacy and medicine in the arabic-speaking world, like north africa, the middle east and central asia. throughout the arab middle east, pharmacies still exist, although most of them date back to the early 20th century. physicians often traveled extensively to muslim countries to treat patients. students of arab medicine and pharmacy traveled to different parts of the world in search of new and exotic plants and drugs. in addition, young individuals sought their own experiences and success, and traveled to visit renowned pharmacists and physicians, generally superior in status and reputation. these individuals were referred to as “abi-d-dyn” (the elder) or “abi dawud” (the elder prophet). abi dawud, ibn sahl, ibn maseeghi, abu ali as-samarqandi, abu rabah, ibn hibban, as well as many others, traveled throughout the world. the views of different groups of physicians have been recorded and recorded for the first time by travelers, physicians, merchants and enthusiasts throughout the world. arab physicians were known as “al-makhzoor” (the expert), “al-manar” (the calculator), “al-muhtasin” (the expert), and “al-muhawi” (the eloquent), and were also known as “al-bou-sakan” (the many strides), “abu-al-sayab” (abu al-sa’ib), “abu al-ways” (abu the way), “abu al-hilab” (abu al-ruhab), “abu al-mubin” (abu al-mu’bil). a physician from baghdad, known as al-ajurwara, was a prominent figure in the indian subcontinent during the rule of the mughal emperor akbar. this physician was succeeded by a prominent pharmacologist in india, abu abdullah ibn sahl al-balkhi (1527-1605), and the two physicians co-wrote a number of monographs on the subject. another prominent physician from baghdad, al-wafaa’i, was also responsible for the translation of hundreds of arabic text into persian.[9]
