We’ve all been there. You’re rushing to finish a photo editing job, and all of a sudden, you open a file that’s taken a long time to open, and you’re stunned by what you see. In the old days, you would deliberately open a new document, and the tool’s contents would appear almost instantaneously, but that doesn’t work so well anymore. We’ve all had that experience. And the results aren’t good, that’s for sure. If we can’t get rid of this problem, then we need to make Lightroom/Photoshop a bit faster.
Unfortunately, this latest release appears to have done little to address that problem. (I haven’t been able to do time- and memory-based benchmarks, but if I understand the rest of this review correctly, you will not need to go through a large collection of images in order to get the hang of the issue.) For those already familiar with the problems that is, the performance has stayed the same.
There are some changes, though. You’ve already read about a new Auto option, which works much better—and faster—than before. For me, at least, it typically opens images as fast as I would expect from a Windows app (one would hope.) And if for whatever reason I’ve taken more than 150 samples of a particular image, I’ve found the Load Time option helps to bring them all up to speed.
Now for the performance:
The new features like Auto, Dialog Edge Magnification Rate, Edge Magnification Rate, and Auto—which can make editing a relatively complex image take less than a second—are impressive, but as I read the manual, their speed still depends entirely on the size of the image.
That makes sense, of course. If I’m working on a relatively large file, the time needed to load that file will be similar to the time needed to load any other file. So whatever ability to load images faster that is built-in, moves the entire operation along.
As for the rest, that “simplifying” that many people appreciate when it comes to keyboard controls is actually a form of streamlining, I’d say. (It reminds me of the Amazon buy buttons that disappeared from product listings a long time ago—why waste your time looking for that product if you don’t want to buy it? If you can just buy it, why not eliminate the clutter of long descriptions?) It’s not just that so many options are there, with layouts and names and labels and who knows what else, that leads to confusion. Even the names themselves can be confusing. Dialog Edge Magnification Rate? Wouldn’t it make more sense to call it Dialog Edge Quality for clarity?
Also, I’m still not sure how people like things called on/off or off/on. In any case, the new Dialog Edge Magnification is really nice. If I have more than one layer open and I check it, I find that I can still see the background of the layer up close by zooming. It’s a nice feature.
Of all the new features, however, I am most excited about the new Edge Magnification. It is very similar, in concept to the auto-leveling that is at the heart of Photoshop.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably wondering where the hell I’m going with this. If you’re wondering what type of project should you start with, flip back to the video I posted a bit ago. I’ll make the same request as I did back in March – pick a project you’d like to start, and then you can do that with Photoshop Elements.
So while you’re imagining a graphic that shows where you are on your journey, I’ll have fun going through some of the most common methods used to create and play with images and telling you what I’ve learned — and maybe I’ll get a little inspiration by sharing what’s been working well for me.
I’m going to start with some powerful graphic design applications that I’ve built in Adobe Illustrator. Remember, I’m not sharing the paltry subset of Illustrator brushes you can buy or buy for a monthly subscription; I’m sharing the full power of the program with you. I’ve created simple UI elements, ribbon bars, brand backgrounds, logo designs and all the other abstractions you see in designs you make on websites.
As a designer, I’ve learned that creating graphics in Photoshop is a huge task. I spend a lot of time simply finding a style that works for me. When I’m creating something for a client, I’ll go back and forth on which type of layout I like best – sidebar, two columns, three columns, and so on. This process is similar to creating a photo in Photoshop – you’re initially designing something by choosing a shape, proportions, and the placement of elements. As you continue to refine your project, you’ll start using a variety of tools, most notably the type of layer that you are using to work on. Here is an example of layers:

The largest use of Photoshop is for the design of a print media, movies, games, and more. However, it also is a tool for displaying and editing documents in electronic format, e.g., PDF, JPEG, and PNG. Here is a list of some of the key features:
- Resize the images easily and edit the resolution accurately. The version 19 of Elements supports the JPEG 2000 file format. It provides you with the best compression loss-less images and other advanced attributes.
- The Retouch features that will help to add a better look to your photo.
- Increase and decrease the contrast of the image. Enhance the colors using the Color Balance Module.
- Identify and eliminate areas of your image that are not the subject of your photo.
- Adjust for color, black, stabilization, contrast, the sharpness of the image, and the black level.
- Adjust the brightness’s exposure, and the individual tone elements color.
- You can erase the part of an image that that was previously placed or eliminate it. Use the Fill and Brush tools and layers to enrich your images.
- Draw and add text on your image using the Eraser tool, type and draw, and draw shapes.

These changes will enable Photoshop to create a truly seamless workflow. Photoshop for iOS users can interact with Rich Text boxes, JSON files and even draft workflow projects right from their iPad app while they work on the larger screen (the latter courtesy of mode in the Adobe Creative Cloud). Google’s release of its new cloud-based photo editor Picasa 5 has been touted as the alternative to Adobe Photoshop. It features photo-editing apps like Color Splash, which can manipulate the colors of images in a similar way as the old photo editing filters of yore, but it also offers new versions of tools like Posterize, which eliminates portions of a picture to make it easier to edit. It requires the installation of Google Cloud on the computer.
Adobe Photoshop’s 21.x release will be available as a free update for all CS6 users. The new update will bring in a wide array of new features to the table. Start using Photoshop 2019 and see the possibilities of this new tool.

Another feature is the Curves panel, which changes the look of an image by adding black points on the diagonal. You can also use the Liquify filter, which lets you easily change the look of the image by warping and smudging on the whole or the individual layers. Other tools include the Move tool and Eraser tool, which help in editing the image on a canvas. You can use the Content-Aware Fill tool to fix the broken places in the image. The Gradient tool gives a nice look to the image.
Here you can make use of a wide array of adjustment brushes that help you add or remove details from the image. You can also use the Dodge tool for lightening and darkening parts of the image, and the Burn tool to create a strong contrast. The Smudge tool changes the tone of the entire image or just a specific section of the picture. You can also create cool shadows and highlights using the Clone tool.
More features include the Pen tool for drawing freehand lines and the Magic Wand tool for selecting specific items in the picture. You can easily correct the blurry objects in the picture using the Crop tool. With the Healing tool, you can quickly repair the damaged pieces and the Clone Stamp tool, you can instantly copy the details from other parts of the picture to the chosen section. The Clone tool can also be used in other places to edit the image.
To quickly convert a Web format photo into a JPG or TIF image, you can use the ‘Save for Web’, or ‘Save for Mac’ tool. Another useful tool is the ‘Save for Devices’ tool, which converts the image into multiple formats to give you some options in editing the image on any devices.
