i have a little problem: i’m using ubuntu 10.04 and need to put the variable $PATH (containing the path to a directory with a very complicated name) in my.bashrc file (which is read by bash when i login).
Now i tried to use this:
echo $PATH | sed “s#*#\'”$HOME”/actual-path-to-my-dir#”
(where $HOME is my home directory)
but i get the error
sed: no input file
so i tried to add & to ignore that error, but it returned me:
sed: no input file
in fact, i can see, that i get no sed command executed.
Does anybody know what the problem may be?

It’s because $PATH is a shell variable that contains a sequence of directories that must be searched for executables on a system. If you want to add the value of a shell variable to another shell variable, you need to quote the variable, ie:
